Foil 101 Foundation

Starting behind a personal watercraft or on an efoil board using tested and high-quality gear along with Dan's instruction gives each participant the maximum chance of learning to foil on the first session.  Using larger foils and slow speeds, each participant gets a chance to master the basics of keeping the board "on foil".  This clinic will get more granular in the fine points of establishing a plane on foil, pitch control, roll center stabilization, and safe falling techniques.  By the end of the lesson, participants should be ready to start learning on their own or choose to take foil 2.0 if their goal is to SUP Paddle Foil into waves or downwind conditions.

Wing Foil 101
Foundation

This course takes place in the stunning, fresh, and protected waters of the iconic Columbia River Gorge. As you glide along the water, your instructor will be guiding you verbally through the 2-way communication helmets, offering live instructions, modifications, and cheat codes to make learning the sport considerably less time-consuming, painful, and frustrating.  Learning to wing foil takes more than just 2 hours to master, and this course will lay the foundation, giving you a road map to mastering the sport on your own or with subsequent lessons, which can substantially shorten the time it takes to learn.  If you want to take the absolute fastest track to learning and love having an instructor with you the entire time, please look into our multi-session deals.   What you can expect: We’ll start on land, covering the basics like safe wing handling, sailing fundamentals, hand placement, and body positioning. Once we hit the water, we'll focus on all the essential basic skills you will need to get you wing foiling, such as:

  • Deep water remounts

  • Wing handling techniques

  • Self-recovery and rescue skills

  • Turning and changing direction

  • Footwork and body, board, balance techniques

This course unfolds in the breathtaking, serene embrace of the Columbia River Gorge — a place where the water runs deep and calm, and the wind seems to cheer you on. As you glide across the surface, your instructor will be right there with you (through your 2-way communication helmet), offering accurate, insightful guidance, helpful tips, and a few secret “cheat codes” to make your learning journey much quicker, more fun, and way less frustrating than learning on your own.   We’ll begin on solid ground (approx 20min), where you’ll get a feel for the essentials — from safe wing handling,  how to re-launch, and wing-controlled steering, to deep water remount and kneeling to standing transition while being pulled by the wing. Once you’re ready to take that first dip, we’ll move to the water and dive directly into the skills that will have you up and riding in no time, including: Re-mounting your board after a fall in deep waterMastering the flow of wing handling and the "wing flip"Learning different techniques for waterstart to discover what works best for your style and body movementLearning to stay upwind, in taxi mode (not on foil), and turn around downwind (gybe) and return to shore/starting pointLearning the "pop-up" to go from Taxi to Foil modeEach of our courses will meet the participant where they are at in their skill development, and will build on those skills to advance them to the next level.  Your instructor will also be offering personalized recommendations and tuning tips to match your unique style and goals, whether you're just starting or dreaming of your next big wing-foiling adventure. More than just a lesson, this is your chance to connect with the magic of the Gorge, feel the joy of learning something new, and walk (or foil!) away with the confidence to chase the wind wherever it calls.
